Jac Jemc Selects Winning Manuscript: Leslie Parry’s KIDDO to Debut in HFR 4.2

Parry-photoJac Jemc, author of A Different Bed Every Time (Dzanc Books, 2014), has selected Leslie Parry’s Kiddo to win the HFR 4.2 fiction chapbook contest. As the grand prize winner, Parry will receive $250, a printed copy of the issue, a limited edition HFR t-shirt, a lifetime digital subscription to HFR, and her chapbook will be published in HFR 4.2 in summer 2015.

Parry is the author of a novel, Church of Marvels, out from Ecco in May. Her stories have appeared in The PEN/O. Henry Prize Stories, Indiana Review, Isthmus, The Journal, and other publications. Originally from Los Angeles, she now lives in Chicago.

Parry joins past winners Flower Conroy (Facts about Snakes & Hearts, selected by Kristina Marie Darling and published in 4.1), Colin Winnette (Follow Through, selected by Lucy Corin and published in 3.3), Jim Redmond (Shirts or Skins, selected by Noah Eli Gordon and published in 3.2), and Ryder Collins (The way the sky was now, selected by Amber Sparks and published in 3.1).

About the manuscript, Jemc said: “Kiddo is a knockout. The language paints the set for this story with natural, assured strokes: cars are the color of licorice and goons get slugged and panic fizzes. Kiddo is a mystery full to the brim. Family, friendship, mistaken identity, poverty and the allure of Old Hollywood combine to ensure that every sentence is packed with intrigue and heart. I couldn’t be more excited to have found such a worthy entry.” We are pleased to give it a home.

Finalists for the contest were:

Shawn Huelle of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, with A Determination of Parts
Marc Sheehan of Grand Haven, Michigan, with Dissenting Opinion from the Committee for the Beatitudes
Shaun Turner of Morgantown, West Virginia, with Strange Things Happening
Zach VandeZande of Carrboro, North Carolina, with Odds
Chelsea Laine Wells of Dallas, Texas, with Exit Music

Per their achievement, each finalist is guaranteed to receive special mention in the issue as well as other prizes, including a lifetime digital subscription to the journal, a printed copy of the issue, and a limited edition HFR t-shirt.
